Parents Achieving with Collaborative Teamwork

This service will assist separated parents with education and support where high level of conflict is affecting their relationship with their children. It will help them to focus on the children’s needs, instead of on the conflict with the other parent.

The service will consist of 3 hours seminars based on Interrelate’s Building Connections program. Participants will be encouraged to learn strategies to take care of themselves, develop more effective ways of communicating with the other parent, understand the consequences for the children in relationship to ongoing conflict between their parents, and assist parents to develop long-term parenting arrangements for their children.

Participants will attend individual intake and assessment interviews prior to attending a seminar. Separated parents will not attend the same seminar. Participants will also be assisted with referrals to other specialized services as required.

Seminars will be held across Latrobe City and Wellington Shire on a regular basis.

Centacare Gippsland's Key Services:

Family and Relationship Counselling

Counselling aims to empower and support individuals, couples and families during difficult and stressful times, at all stages of life. Counselling can be a very positive experience which can enhance communication skills and enhance feelings of love and acceptance.

Counselling is a process of facing difficulties or confusion and making appropriate decisions after exploring the available options. Counsellors do not judge a person or dictate what a person should do. People are free to make their own choices and decisions. The counsellor will try to help people view their options and support them through any pain and confusion they may be experiencing.

Counselling can be useful for couples and families or individuals dealing with:
  • Conflict and Stress
  • Separation
  • Reconciliation
  • Entering a second marriage
  • Learning to step parent
  • Verbal, emotional or physical abuse
  • Grief and Loss
  • Improving communication

Drought Counselling, Support and Community Development

This program aims to promote the mental health and well being of families and individuals adversely affected by drought in the Wellington Shire and the East Gippsland area.

Many individuals and families in these areas are experiencing pain and suffering due to long term drought and its effects.

Counselling

Centacare's core work is counselling to address some of the emotional pain caused by the drought effects. However it also accesses referral bodies, facilitates educational group work sessions and collaborates with other relevant agencies for community development strategies.

Counselling and support are free to those affected by the drought. Counselling is strictly confidential and provided by trained professionals.

Many people manage their lives without needing to speak to a professional counsellor. However, sometimes the circumstances we find ourselves in are much greater than normal coping skills can manage. Situations like drought, which leaves us feeling powerless and out of control, severely test our coping skills. Our relationships may be affected and our normal support systems may not be enough to help us survive emotionally.

Bushfire Community Recovery Service

The bushfires of early February 2009 had a major impact on Gippsland communities. Initial funding was provided by the Commonwealth to provide community support and counselling for families and individuals who are not coping emotionally.

Centacare has received further funding, to provide services over 3 years, from the Archdiocese of Melbourne Bushfire Appeal, Diocese of Sale Bushfire Appeal and specific donations to Centacare directly.

Community Development

The vision is to build communities that are stronger than they were before the 2009 fires. Centacare will continue to collaborate with other local agencies to rebuild affected communities.

The community development responses will need to vary over time, as communities move through various phases of adjustment to the bushfires.

Bushfire Counselling

Many bushfire affected families, couples and individuals are going through enormous emotional roller coasters and are struggling to know where to go or how to cope with these unfamiliar thoughts and feelings. They have never even contemplated seeking out counselling services.

Volunteer Training

A volunteer who is competent in their role – well-trained – will have more reason to continue volunteering than one who is not confident and under stress because they lack competence.

Volunteer training is a program that empowers current and future volunteers. This group training is for people who do voluntary work in many different settings including the parish, local community organisations, hospitals, pastoral care, and St Vincent de Paul.

The Volunteer Training program consists of separate workshops with topics such as Values and Confidentiality, Positive Communication Skills, Active Listening Skills, Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution, Assertive Conversations, Stress Management and Grief and Loss. Groups can choose the topics they would like for their particular needs. This program can be provided for 2 hour sessions for 4 – 6 weeks in the evening or day time or for 2 consecutive Saturdays.
